Golf may have been invented in the UK but it is no longer where the clubs are made. Enda Mullen caught up with a man hoping to change all that.
Having made a career out of restoring old golf clubs, there isn’t much Mario Francolini doesn’t know about a set of irons.
Now the Studley entrepreneur is hoping to utilise the knowledge he has built up to take his passion a step further and create his own club from scratch.
And Mr Francolini is predicting the Jack Golf MF101 wedge his company Golf Alchemy have developed is set to revolutionise the sport and prove high quality bespoke British design really is the best.
The club is the first product being launched by the newly-established Jack Golf brand, with other clubs set to follow in due course.
“All golf clubs in past 30 years have been made in Asia and nobody else has made them in that time,” said Mr Francolini.
“We are launching the first British-made golf club in a very long time. I do feel we have got something very special here and hopefully it’ll be a case of Britain bites back.”
At the moment the new club is being kept firmly under wraps until it is unveiled at a special launch event taking place towards the end of October.
In the world of golf club manufacturing it would seem the fear of industrial espionage is very much alive and Mr Francolini has concerns competitors in the Far East, where most of the world’s golf clubs are currently made, might try to copy it.
“If they got wind of it it would be copied tomorrow,” he said.
As well as technology employed to ensure accuracy and a long-lasting spin, it is the new club’s longevity and durability that Mr Francolini feels will prove a big selling point.
“If you use any of the latest wedges within 50 shots they will start to go blunt,” he said.
