Artist Stuart Murdoch has been commissioned by Birmingham City Council to create a sculpture out of recycled materials.

He produced similar art for several local authorities in Britain as part of a project to raise awareness of the nation's approach to waste.

For Birmingham he produced a model of new Library of Birmingham, which is currently being constructed in Centenary Square.

Laura Underwood, of Recycle Now, said: "We are, as a nation, getting better at recycling.

"Research shows the vast majority of us recycle items such as paper (89 per cent), glass bottles and jars (84 per cent).

"But less than a third of us say we are recycling less common items such as electronic equipment, from microwaves to televisions and anything in between."
