Birmingham-based UK Mail wins £45million contract to deliver TV licences
As the strike chaos at the Royal Mail continues, a Birmingham postal firm has won a £45m contract with the BBC.
Washwood Heath-based UK Mail, which is the largest privately-owned mail firm in the country, won the £9 million-a-year contract with the BBC to do all the postal services for the TV Licensing department.
This will involve an estimated 60 million deliveries a year. The contract runs for an initial one-year period, but can be extended for up to five years.
UK Mail was one of three bidders for the BBC contract. It had already been working with the BBC for two years before this latest contract was signed.
A spokeswoman for UK Mail said: “We are obviously delighted that they have renewed the contract, because they are such a prestigious organisation it is good to be involved with them.”
UK Mail is owned by the national Business Post group. It is the leading competitor for the Royal Mail, which is currently paralysed by industrial action.
A fresh wave of strikes is set to take place, after workers went on strike for both Thursday and Friday this week. There is set to be a three day strike from next Thursday (October 29) involving more than 120,000 workers.
