Lawyers behaving badly in sun? Here’s hoping...
Word reaches me that the work hard/play hard end of the legal fraternity are off on their travels again.
It seems that Mike Ward, senior partner of HBJ Gateley Wareing, is taking his chums over to Portugal to celebrate his 50th birthday.
Somewhere in the Algarve in June, it is suggested.
I assume this means that fearsome socialites like Brendan McGeever and Paul Hayward will be indulging in the usual Brits Abroad shame.
No doubt a good laugh will be had by all. You can bet on the antics and the stories being priceless.
But will Portugal survive both the world recession and the arrival of the Gateley mob?
Ward, of course, is a dark horse. Serious exterior but mischievous sense of humour.
And how do we know that he is at least 50?
The give-away is in his pen portrait on the firm’s website.
Lists his favourite film as The Great Escape and favourite record as I’m a Believer by The Monkees.
And why is Gateley so well run?
Is it the people? Is it the clients? Is it the culture?
No, it’s the thrift.
Asked to name the luxury item he would take with him were he stranded on a desert island, the boy declares it would be a toothbrush.
I think I’d prefer Hayward’s choice – an endless supply of good wine.
Which is guaranteed on the Algarve!
The usual pint of foaming ale for anyone prepared to break tour rules and inform Bright of what went on.
