Beacons will host this year’s St Basil’s walk challenge

St Basil’s traditional summer challenge for teams of walkers heads to the Brecon Beacons this May.

Teams from businesses across the region are already signing up for the challenge on Saturday, May 30th.

Nick Venning, chairman of St Basil’s fundraising and external relations committee is hoping yet again companies will rise to the challenge.

He said: “Last year, some 670 participants enjoyed an ‘interesting’ day yomping through the Derbyshire Peak District raising over £70,000 for St Basils work with young homeless people in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

“We are extremely grateful to all concerned. This year, our 10th event, we skip across to Wales and invite you to join us for The Brecon Beacons Challenge.

“Again, we offer you the choice of either 28 or 14-mile routes amongst some of the most spectacular upland, lake and canalside scenery anywhere in the UK.”

He stressed the challenge is not for the faint hearted or unfit.

“As with all our outdoor adventures, this challenge requires fitness, physical stamina and participants will need to have a good sense of direction; this is definitely not the proverbial Saturday afternoon stroll in the park with the dog!

Teams of three to six walkers can take part in the circular routes and even the driver can take part.

Nick said: “St Basils will provide all support and back-up services, a comprehensive route guide written and tested by St Basils’ Steve Rainbow and myself, and participants will be able to take advantage of a complimentary hot meal at the finish where there will also be a cash bar. The event is again generously sponsored by Cadburys

“There really is nothing else quite like this in the calendar. It represents everything that is most exemplary in our business community, most admirable in our attitude to corporate social responsibility and most laudable of our relationship with the city’s charity sector as a whole. However, it’s also fantastic fun and everyone ends the day with a real sense of achievement to say nothing of enough stories to dine out on for the rest of the year! I cannot see why you would not want to be part of it and very much hope that you will join us.”
