Rich List 2012: =No.46 - Ozzy Osbourne and Family (£100m)
The biggest thing to happen to legendary Brummie rocker Ozzy Osbourne in 2011 was the announcement that he is to hook-up with his former band-mates to reform the massively successful Black Sabbath.
The four original members of the band – Ozzy, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward are to reform to make their first new album in 33 years, due for release in the autumn.
They will perform at the Download Festival in June as part of a world tour. Twenty European dates have been announced, including Moscow, Paris, Oslo, Helsinki, Vienna and Athens.
The reunion announcement was made at the Whiskey a Go-Go club in Los Angeles. Black Sabbath made their Los Angeles debut there 41 years ago. The original line-up reunited in 1997 to headline the Ozzfest festival, and released the live album Reunion, recorded at the NEC in 1998. The project came to an end when Ozzy resumed his solo career.
It’s been another good year for Ozzy. Fresh from a tour of the States and Brazil – where he has a huge fan base – he was officially named a nation treasure. The Euromillions National Treasures report voted him the West Midlands Greatest Living National Treasure.
And he is to become a granddad again. His 25 year-old son Jack revealed that his actress fiancée Lisa Stelly is pregnant, giving Ozzy grandchild number five.
Earlier in 2011 Jack produced a documentary about his rock legend fathercalled God Bless Ozzy Osbourne.
Despite being 62 Ozzy is not about to leave the rock and roll lifestyle behind, though he’s more likely to enjoy a cup of Yorkshire tea first thing in the morning than the drink and drugs he’s better known for. He’s been clean for more than six years.
Ozzy’s company, Monowise, has a turnover of more than £4 million and is doing nicely, boosted by his touring, personal appearances and his albums. Sharon continues to boost the Osbourne fortune with TV advertising deals and TV appearances.
It’s a long way from Ozzy’s childhood in Lodge Road, Aston, born into a poverty stricken family with six children. Bullied at school and suffering learning difficulties, he turned his back on crime and found refuge in music.
His big leap from rock star to celebrity came in 2002 when he became the unlikely star of an MTV reality TV series The Osbournes. The series, based on the unconventional domestic life of Ozzy and his family ran for three years and became one of MTV’s greatest hits.
He lives on a vast Buckinghamshire estate and has homes in Beverly Hills and Malibu, but Ozzy remains Brum’s favourite rocker. The biggest thing to happen to legendary Brummie rocker Ozzy Osbourne in 2011 was the announcement that he is to hook-up with his former band-mates to reform the massively successful Black Sabbath.
