Chamberlain building to become a city gem

The Chamberlain Building in the heart of the Jewel-lery Quarter is getting a major facelift with the arrival of three new tenants.

Tesco Express, Subway and William Hill have all signed up for the refurbished ground floor commercial space in the mixed use development by Birmingham regeneration specialist, MCD.

The two upper floors of the scheme will be refurbished to supply just under 10,000 sq ft of prime open-plan office space.

"It has long been said that the Jewellery Quarter is lacking in quality convenience stores," said Steven Byrne, director of MCD. "And we believe these latest signings assists in the next wave of regeneration of the area and provides a clear indication to other leading commercial operators that there is a rich new community to draw upon.

"As residents ourselves of the Jewellery Quarter we feel the new tenants will be extremely beneficial, not only in attracting new job opportunities, but by significantly enhancing a major landmark building, creating a vibrant signpost for the area." The building is being given a major refurbishment and re-cladding. Tesco Express is due to open its doors this Autumn, followed by Subway and William Hill.

Andy Munro, from the Jewellery Quarter Regeneration Partnership, added: "The addition of a major new convenience store is all part of the vision for the Quarter as an urban village where both businesses and residents have easy access to all the facilities needed to encourage people to live and work in this part of Birmingham."

MCD is in George Street in the Jewellery Quarter and is refurbishing Brindley House in Newhall Street, a former 1970s office block adjacent to the BT Tower, which is being transformed to create 182 luxury apartments, and Derwent House in St Paul's Square to 98 apartments and 10,000 sq ft of office space.
