So tricky is the Scots vocabulary of Burns’ poem (what’s a “weel-swall’d kyte” when it’s at home ?) that the politics of the piece are often overlooked. It even led to a misprint in the first Edinburgh edition of the verse in the following year, and cost Burns much cash in having to re-print. Read
