Combine road tax and insurance

Dear Editor, With the latest action being taken by authority to ensure all road vehicles (except SORN certificated) are properly insured an important barrier will be raised against irresponsible drivers who have no intention of accepting any third party burden.

This often at great cost financially, and sometimes physically, to their unfortunate victims.

Fair settlement of claims depends too much on chance, and that all implicated drivers and vehicles in an accident will be covered by valid insurance.

How much easier then would it be if , as in the state of Victoria, Australia, compulsory third party insurance is automatically included as part of the annual motor registration fee.

In other words, the vehicle would not be issued with the licence disc unless both fees were paid together.

All drivers would automatically be covered for making third party claims and themselves enjoy protection against claims from other implicated car owners. Comprehensive, or other insurance cover, could still be taken out with insurance providers.

Albert Cox,
Bournville.
