One cannot help but feel, however, that English Heritage has lost touch with reality over its decision to intervene in the restoration of Malvern Priory’s bell tower. The Government’s statutory adviser on historic buildings and monuments is insisting on the preservation of a set of clapped out A-frames in the bell tower, even though retention of the duff parts is threatening to silence the bells for the first time in 650 years. Without new replacement frames, bellringers say it is inevitable that the bells will become too tricky to ring and a bitter blow will be dealt to the disappearing art of campanology. Malvern’s next generation of bell ringers will not be able to learn and practise the noble craft and another facet of traditional English town and village life will be consigned to the history books.
