Post Comment: Trying not to tread on sensitive toes

Like a horror movie villain, some arguments just won’t die.

They include the “Greater Birmingham” question. What should local authorities in the area call themselves when they work together?

Are they the “West Midlands”? Are they “Greater Birmingham”? Or should they invent a convoluted and lengthy name which avoids offence by naming every member of the partnership individually?

In the case of Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, the term West Midlands was a non-starter. You can’t be the West Midlands without the Black Country towns and cities, and they’ve decided to do their own thing.

But somebody appears to have realised that listing all the members wouldn’t work either. You could name it Birmingham, Solihull, East Staffordshire, Lichfield and Tamworth Local Enterprise Partnership if you wanted, but nobody will actually say all that. Before long, it would just be known as “the Birmingham LEP” for short.

So the obvious compromise is to call it Greater Birmingham.

Yes, this is like a red rag to anyone who fears the big bad city is out to dominate its smaller neighbours, but in practice it allows everyone to ride the city’s coattails.

Alas, Solihull doesn’t see it that way, so Greater Birmingham and Solihull it must be. But as long as only one of the Birmingham’s partners demands separate billing, it should work.
