SOUL sensation Mary Wilson opened an exhibition in Birmingham featuring the glamorous garments she used to wear on stage with Motown supergroup The Supremes.

Ms Wilson, an ever-present in the iconic group which also starred Diana Ross, was at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery yesterday to launch The Story of the Supremes.

Hundreds of lavish, bright, sparkly dresses, charting The Supremes’ long-standing career from when they first appeared on TV as The Primettes in the 1950s to their last shows in the late 1970s, feature in the display.

Mary, now aged 65, said: “It was exciting because we always wanted to be glamarous and dress up so it was one of those things where the designer would bring us a gown and we would say ‘oh wow that’s gorgeous, we look good in that’.

“We wanted everything but could not get everything.”
