Nick Drake tribute concert lined up for Birmingham

Nick Drake

Birmingham Town Hall is to host a Nick Drake tribute concert in May, with performances by Blur's Graham Coxon, Beth Orton, Martha Wainwright and Robyn Hitchcock.

The concert will form part of the English Originals Folk Festival, held in Birmingham from May 15-17, which will also see concerts by Seth Lakeman and Rachel Unthank, along with a screening of a Nick Drake documentary.

Drake, from Tanworth-in-Arden, took his own life in 1974 after releasing three albums which did not enjoy commercial success.

However, in the years that followed, his music began to receive more and more acclaim and he was hailed has a major influence in a generation of British singer songwriters.

Many fans still make the pilgrimage to his grave in Tanworth-in-Arden on the anniversary of his death.

During the English Originals Folk Festival 2009, producer Joe Boyd will also host a conversation evening where he will recall tales of his involvement with Drake, Fleetwood Mac, Muddy Waters and Pink Floyd.
