Vintage choice for curry

Entrepreneur and food-lover Balwinder Thukral has created a range of wines to bring the best out of curry.

Balwinder, a law graduate, was inspired to find wines that complement spicy dishes having got fed up with being offered bland house wines in restaurants.

He said: “I thought about the wines that people chose to drink with spicy foods back in 2001. At that time, the food was very basic and people were happy to drink basic house wines. Nowadays though, with the help of food articles and magazines, as well as the numerous cookery programmes on television, the knowledge of the consumer is far more advanced and expectations are higher. Food and service has improved, but the quality of the drinks has been left behind.

“This is why I have developed the Nasha brand of wine – to give the consumer more choice and also a wine that matches spicy foods.”

The trio of wines feature a shiraz and a sauvignon blanc but the pick of the bunch is the aromatic gamay rose. All the wines, from the south-west of France, have an alcoholic volume of 12 per cent, which means they are fruity without being heavy or over-powering on the palate.

A percentage of each bottle of wine sold is donated to international water charities.
