Spa Review: The Spa at The Belfry, Wishaw, Sutton Coldfield

The Spa at The Belfry

Isn’t it always the way with important business calls? You wait continually for the mobile to ring and when it finally does go off it happens 60 seconds before you are about to indulge yourself with a spot of “me” time.

I’m preparing to zone out at The Belfry’s coolly refurbished and aptly named, simply THE Spa, when my phone trills in the relaxation room.

I dart into a corridor and hurriedly sort out the question at hand, which has been weeks coming to fruition. I then hurriedly seek out my therapist, who I have asked to wait. Heart pounding, I apologise profusely to Lisa. She just smiles and tells me everything is fine. And it is.

Within two minutes of lying flat out on a gently heated treatment table, warm towels cloaking my lower half, the phone call and the hassle leading up to it is forgotten. I’m in another place, a place where there are no worries or stresses, and I can’t give anywhere a higher recommendation than that.

There are 10 luxury treatment rooms, decorated in rich, calming colours, and a dual treatment room is available for lovebirds of any age to be pampered side by side. The place is ideal for all-day spas (The Belfry also has a fantastically good fun Fire & Ice aquaspa and a good size indoor swimming pool) or simply for one-off individual treatments.

The Belfry is, of course, synonymous with golf. Dedicated weekend amateurs and scratch players make a pilgrimage to this place to pit their skills against the challenges of one of the world’s most famous courses.

It was on the Brabazon, one of three courses at The Belfry, outside Sutton Coldfield, that the European team wrestled back the Ryder Cup in 1985 after 28 years of US domination. The Belfry has hosted golf’s biggest tournament a further three times.

All that driving, chipping and putting can take a toll on a chap’s body – not to mention his feet and nails – but there is a special menu of spa treatments designed specifically for men in need of post-golf TLC.

The top price face, scalp and back treatment (£73) offers 80 minutes of restorative care, working on energy points. Even if you don’t understand the science, just lie back and enjoy the cleansing, exfoliation and back massage. A scalp and facial massage is included.
