Edward Stephens discovers life's fine and dandy on millionaire's row in Albufeira.
I’ve been thinking about it for some time and it’s given me a few sleepless nights.
If I ever became a Euro lottery winner what would I do with the cash?
Well now I have the answer, or at least I’ve found a home for some of the money.
I recently arrived home from a holiday in the Algarve where I stayed in this appealing little place which just happens to be up for sale. I say little, but to be fair that’s somewhat of a misnomer, because Casa Dar Albar is anything but little – in fact it’s huge.
When I arrived at the villa just outside Albufeira the American owner was just leaving.
And when she happened to mention the property was on the market for a cool €4 million I’m sure the noise of my jaw hitting the floor made her physically jump.
“Oh it’s about the right price,” she said, defensively. “The one next door went some time ago for €3.7 million and we have a better location.”
And when I finally walked into the house I could see why it justified such a price tag.
Casa Dar Albar, with its spectacular location and designer interior could easily have been an A-list star’s home whisked from Beverly Hills.
The three-storey, four-bedroomed property is built in a classic Moorish style and set on a cliff top amongst a mass of trees and almost every room looks out to sea.
The lounge – complete with white furniture and bar – is on the top floor, and between it and the formal dining room there is a spectacular balcony where you can sit in the evenings for drinks with friends and enjoy the panorama of the waves rolling in from the direction of North Africa and pretend you are part of the jet-set lifestyle.
Two of the four vast en-suite bedrooms have large balconies while the two ground floor ones have their own terraces, and three out of the four have separate dressing rooms. Two even have their own lounges.
And if any movie director needs to film a scene for Casablanca the master bedroom with its intricate brickwork ceiling, Arabian-style keyhole-shaped door frames and lattice work on the windows would be perfect.
At the rear of the house a garden of spectacular palm trees and cacti gives way to a large infinity pool, the blue waters of which morph into the ocean beyond. Alongside is a separate poolside dining area complete with barbecue.
So spectacular is the property and its outlook that tourists passing by in boats wave and take photographs.
“Shall I wave back to the common people” a friend of mine said, having become wrapped up in the illusion of a playboy lifestyle for a week.
Now that the couple who built this spectacular home on the rocky headland within touching distance of the ocean near Albufeira are now selling it, Midlands-based Villa Select – which featured the property, on the Algarve’s “millionaire’s row” – have had to take it off the books.
But there are several others of equal standard that the company features in its brochure, giving you the chance to live that millionaire lifestyle.
The villa’s setting – along with numerous others from Villa Select – belies its location. For the busy town of Albufeira is just five or six minutes’ drive away in one direction and the pretty sandy bay of San Rafael in the other.
San Rafael is an ideal family beach, with soft sand, clear water and just one rustic-style restaurant looking out to sea.
