A Birmingham academic has laid claim to finding the key to the perfect golf swing.

Dr Matt Bridge, senior lecturer in coaching and sports science at the University of Birmingham, has been using 3D technology to pinpoint how golfers could boost their performance on the fairways.

Players, ranging from PGA pros to high-handicap novices, are wired up with special sensors and ask to recreate their swing.

The sensors then build up a 3D picture which allows Dr Bridge to analyse what changes need to be made to correct the golfer’s swing.

"Posture is really important in how it affects a golf swing," said Dr Bridge.

"If you are sitting at a desk all day using a computer and a mouse, then your muscles and body get used sitting down, so it will have an effect on your golf swing if you go and play nine holes after work.

"It’s the same for younger players who play on computer games as their arms are locked and tight as a result.

"Posture really impacts on how you swing the golf club, and the 3D analysis looks at identifying issues that can be improved on."
