DARREN Bent has hailed Gabby Agbonlahor for proving that the duo can play together as strike partners during Aston Villa’s welcome win over Wigan.
Agbonlahor scored the first and created the second for Bent during the club’s first-ever league victory against the Latics at Villa Park.
The deadly double act proved wrong doubters, including former boss Gerard Houllier apparently, who felt they could not operate in the same frontline.
“There have been a few games when we haven’t created many chances and it has been a bit stale at times,” said Bent.
“But we looked dangerous and I thought Gabby was fantastic. He is playing really well and the team is confident at the moment.
“There were people who said me and Gabby couldn’t play together because we are too similar.
“But we complement each other well and give each other chances. Hopefully it will continue and Villa can have a good season.
“I don’t think there are too many strikers playing better than him. He looks strong and fast and dangerous. The goals he has been scoring this season have been fantastic.”
Asked if Houllier was among those who thought he and Agbonlahor could not play as a pair, Bent replied: “Maybe.
“I know he never said it, but you could tell by the team shape last season.
“We only played one striker at times and when we did play two it tended to be me and Emile Heskey. It answers itself really.
“There were a few people who thought it.
“Last season when I came I didn’t really play with Gabby up front, he played wide left.
“At the start of this season the gaffer played him left, but it seems to be working well us together and hopefully it will continue.”
