Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after being involved in a crash on the M1 in the early hours of Sunday.
The 21-year-old midfielder smashed into the central reservation of the M1 at around 5.30am yesterday.
He was arrested by police officers, along with a 20-year-old friend, in the nearby village of Bulwell, in Nottinghamshire.
Officers questioned and breathalysed the Scottish international, who had played in Villa's 2-1 home defeat to West Brom on Saturday afternoon.
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: "A Range Rover collided with the central reservation near junction 26 at around 5.30am. No other vehicles were involved.
"Two men aged 20 and 21 were arrested in Bulwell on suspicion of drink-driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
"Both have been bailed pending further enquiries."
