ASTON Villa star Barry Bannan has been charged with drink driving following a motorway smash last month.
Nottinghamshire Police said the 21-year-old from Sutton Coldfield was charged on Monday evening with four motoring offences.
The charges were driving with excess alcohol, failing to stop after a road accident, driving a motor
vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving without due care and attention.
Bannan has been bailed to appear at Nottingham magistrates’ court on Friday November 25.
A spokesman said the charges followed a “single vehicle collision on the M1 in Nottinghamshire” near Watnall, at around 5.30am on Sunday October 23.
Police were forced to temporarily close part of the motorway after a Range Rover smashed into the central reservation barrier, near to junction 26.
Midlfielder Bannan, 21, was with Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins, 20 - a former Villa player - when they were both stopped by police as they walked through nearby Bulwell, Notts, after the 5.30am smash.
The incident saw Bannan temporarily banished from the side in a club-imposed suspension that saw him miss the game against Sunderland.
The Scotland international returned to training, re-joining his colleagues at Bodymoor Heath a week later but was not picked for the game against Norwich.
