Giovanny Espinoza signs for Birmingham City

Birmingham City have signed Ecuadorian defender Giovanny Espinoza from Barcelona Sporting Club on a two-year deal.

The centre-half is Ecuador’s second highest capped player, amassing more than 80 appearances for La Tri, including two World Cups to date.

Espinoza is no stranger to Europe having previously had a spell at Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem during the 2007/08 season. The 32-year-old’s former clubs include Aucas and LDU Quito, both from Ecuador, Mexican outfit Monterrey and Brazilian side Cruzeiro.

An imposing figure in the centre of defence – standing at 6ft 2in, Espinoza is widely recognised for his strong physique and speed.

In an statement on the Birmingham City website, Espinoza admits he can’t wait to pull on a royal blue jersey.

"I’m very much looking to playing for this club," he said. "It’s a new step in my football career and I hope I can help the team. I think I can bring experience to the defence as I’ve played a lot of games at club level and for the national team.

"My objective is the same as the team, to first of all help the club remain in the Premier League. Personally I hope to establish myself in the team, give 100% in every game and play as much as possible."

Espinoza, Blues’ fifth summer signing, will join fellow countryman Christian Benitez, Scott Dann, Stephen Carr and Joe Hart at St. Andrew’s.
