Sutton Coldfield win Greater Birmingham Sevens tournament

The victorious Sutton Coldfield Sevens squad

Warwickshire County Cup Champions Sutton Coldfield won the Aaron Boyce Memorial Greater Birmingham Sevens tournament, beating Bournville 28-14 in the final at Moseley's Billesley Common ground.

The Sutton side performed well in the early rounds seeing of the Boyce Barbarians 14-0 and OTT 27-12 to progress to the quarter-finals, where they came up against last year’s plate winners Jokers from Bromsgrove who were dispatched 35-5.

The semi-final, against reigning champions Akkies, saw Sutton avenge last year’s final defeat with a 28-7 victory.

Sutton took charge of the final from the off with, and within two minutes, they made the first score with a superb break by captain James Butler, when he left the Bournville defence trailing in his wake. Bournville fought back and at half time Sutton led 14-7.

Dave Edwards breaks away to score for Sutton Coldfield in the Sevens Final

Dave Edwards woke the second half up with a bang as he blasted down the right wing with his blistering pace, to score his first of two tries of the game, and extend Sutton's lead.

A Bournville try pulled the score back to 21–14 but, within moments of the restart, Edwards charged three-quarters of the pitch to put the game beyond doubt.

Moseley number 8 James Rodwell made the presentations after the match.
