LV County Championship: at The Oval (day 2 of 4) Warwickshire 329 (D L Maddy 134, D W Steyn 51, N C Saker 4-98) v Surrey 8-0
When he arrived at Edgbaston Dale Steyn commented that his aim was "to make some friends and be invited back."
Little more than a month has passed, but the South African fast bowler can feel satisfied that both objectives have been achieved.
Though it is Steyn's impact with the ball that has been the key ingredient in Warwickshire's fine start to the season, it was his batting that rescued his new team from a grim situation on day two of this championship clash.
Coming to the crease amid a collapse that brought back memories of last year, Steyn bludgeoned the second first-class half-century of his career and helped add 56 for the last wicket. Not only did it earn Warwickshire an extra bonus point, but it riled a Surrey team that had begun to recover their strut.
Steyn's cameo could not mask a poor performance from Warwickshire, however. Losing six for 65 on this wicket is unacceptable and their total is some way below average. It was, far and away, their worst display of the season.
Warwickshire lost three wickets from the first 22 balls of the day. Darren Maddy apart they failed to adjust to the extra bounce of the pitch and only Steyn was able to progress beyond 24.
Alex Loudon was unfortunate. He somehow managed to edge the first delivery of the day - a filthy ball down the leg side - to the keeper, but all the other batsmen were largely responsible for their own downfall.
Maddy, adding just one to his overnight score, attempted to drive one that was too short for the shot and spooned a catch to cover, while Tim Ambrose slashed horribly without moving his feet and edged to slip. With Andy Flower, England's new assistant coach, watching on, it could prove a costly error.
Heath Streak played-on after driving at a wide ball without enough foot movement, before Naqaash Tahir prodded at one he should have left, though Anyon resisted stoutly for 45-minutes to support Steyn.
Steyn (46 balls, six fours and two sixes) is modest about his batting ability, but clearly has a good eye and fast hands. He swatted Matt Nicolson for a straight four second ball, then drove him for six over long on.
The introduction of Nayan Doshi's spin was met by a superb reverse sweep for another boundary before another straight six broke a panel on the pavilion sidescreen.
His bucolic method riled a few on the Surrey side. Rikki Clarke, clearly not enjoying the treatment, was warned for delivering a beamer, while Chris Schofield looked as if he wished the ground would swallow him up after dropping a skier at long on when the batsman had 36.
"It was an enjoyable battle," Steyn said afterwards. "My battle with Rikki may have looked heated, but as we walked off he gave me a tap and said 'well played.' We were discussing who looked the bigger fool; me for missing or him for failing to get me out. I guess we both looked foolish."
At present Steyn is only contracted to the club until June 4. Such has been the success of his stay, however, that Warwickshire and the player would like to extend the arrangement.
"I'm having a fabulous time. I'm hitting form with bat and ball and would love to stay a bit longer and help the club push for a trophy," Steyn said. "When I came the incentive was to perform for myself, but I've made so many friends that my incentive now is to perform for the team.
"The club have asked whether I'd be prepared to stay until June 20 and I'd like that. That would mean I could play in the Friends Provident semi-final [and one more championship game] if we get there.
"It's up the Cricket South Africa though. Cricket South Africa don't like their bowlers playing county cricket. They have this mindset that our bodies will be driven into the ground.
"It hasn't been like that here. Warwickshire have looked after me. They've also been sending emails to CSA letting them know exactly what I'm doing and how I am. The club are forming a good relationship with CSA so they won't hesitate in letting bowlers come here in future. I hope something can be worked out."
