West Brom wait on results of Greening scan
West Bromwich Albion skipper Jonathan Greening was to have a scan today to determine the extent of the knee injury suffered against Burnley in the weekend FA Cup tie at The Hawthorns.
Greening limped out of the action during the first half amid initial fears he has sustained medial ligament damage - the first significant injury of his lengthy career.
It means Albion have 10 players from their first team squad on the injury list ahead of Tuesday's home Premier League clash with Manchester United - including five central defenders.
Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is keeping his fingers crossed the influential Greening will only have a short spell on the sidelines but also concedes he could be out of action for two months.
Mowbray said: "Jonathan is having a scan today. It does looks like a medial knee ligament injury. After the scan, we will assess whether it is a grade one, grade two or a grade three problem.
"He could be out for anything from two weeks to six weeks to eight weeks. We will wait and see and keep our fingers crossed that it is as short as spell as possible.
"Since I walked into the place two years or so ago, Jonathan has been our most influential footballer. Him being out for any time is a big blow to us.
"It is actually his first injury of any note in 14 years so he was a bit distraught about it after the game on Saturday."
Greening has joined centre-backs Ryan Donk, Jonas Olsson, Abdoulaye Meite, Leon Barnett and Neil Clement plus midfielder James Morrison and strikers Luke Moore, Ishmael Miller and Craig Beattie on the injury list.
Donk may have to be pressed into service against the Red Devils because of the acute shortage of defensive players despite suffering from a groin injury which meant he had to be substituted against Burnley.
Mowbray said: "The injury list is pretty long at the moment and not an ideal scenario for us but that's part and parcel of football. We have got to get on with it.
"That's why you don't only have 11-12 players on your books, you've got 22-23 players, but to face Manchester United you would want your strongest team."
