West Brom consider appeal over Paul Robinson red card

West Bromwich Albion will decide today whether they will appeal against Paul Robinson’s red card against Manchester United.

The stand-in captain was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ji-Sung Park in the 40th minute last night by referee Rob Styles before Albion went on to lose 5-0 against the leaders and reigning champions at The Hawthorns.

The decision seemed incredibly harsh on Albion, who trailed 1-0 at the time, but manager Tony Mowbray refused to be drawn on his thoughts about the decision and Styles’ overall performance.

Robinson faces a three-match ban to add to Albion’s injury concerns as nine players were unavailable for the visit of United.

“It will be a club decision whether we appeal against the red card,” Mowbray said. “I am pretty sure our hierarchy will have a look at it and decide what to do and I will abide by that.

“It depends what angle you look at it. A lot of people will say it wasn’t and some will say it was. It is a debating topic but it is down to opinion.

“The referee made a decision tonight and it depends on what angle he saw. If his angle was that he thought it was a red card but if the television angle shows he didn’t leave the ground, didn’t show his studs and it was just an honest collision between two players going for the ball then I am pretty sure there will be a case to appeal against it.

“Until we look at it in the cold light of day we don’t know if we will make that decision. I have my own views on it but I am not going to talk about referees because I will get in trouble.

“I will let everyone else make their minds up about his performance,” he said.
