There's more to come from keeper Carson, says West Brom boss

Scott Carson threw the taunts of his detractors back in their faces last Saturday with a superb performance which helped West Bromwich Albion grab a point against Bolton Wanderers, and delighted boss Tony Mowbray believes there is more to come from his England goalkeeper.

Carson has endured a mixed season. He has produced some wonderful saves but has also been punished for some glaring gaffs in high profile games. Any mistakes he has made have been highlighted and used against him as evidence that he is too unreliable as a Premier League keeper.

However, he produced two stunning saves against the Trotters which kept his side in the game and gave them a glimmer of hope that they can escape their precarious position at the foot of the table.

He pulled off a great one-handed reaction save in the first half to stop a Gary Cahill header and then, when Albion were caught out late on while chasing the game, he denied Matt Taylor with a his legs when the Bolton midfielder was clean through on goal.

Some critics of Carson had questioned whether his high-profile mistakes had affected his confidence but Mowbray said there was no such problem with his 23-year-old keeper.

“I don’t think Scott is suffering from any confidence problem,” Mowbray said. “I think he understands our team and the way we play. He gets on with it and he makes good saves.

“We are trying to stamp our own print on Scott Carson as a goalkeeper and change a few things about his game. Like all the outfield players, he is trying to take them on board.
