Wolverhampton Wanderers fans rush to buy Early Bird season tickets

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans are bucking the economic crisis and backing their club’s quest for promotion to the top flight by rushing to snap up season tickets for the 2009-10 campaign.

Supporters are so sure they club will be playing Barclays Premier League football next season that they have taken advantage of the club’s Early Bird scheme which means that they get reductions for booking in advance.

The early purchasing scheme closed yesterday with 14,657 fans snapping up season tickets – the second highest figure since the initiative was launched back in 2002.

With the remaining applications now processed following the March 13 deadline, that is a take-up rate of more than 83 per cent of season ticket holders renewing their seats for next season at a cheaper price than available in the summer.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: “This is a higher figure than we were initially anticipating prior to the final batch of applications and obviously it is great news.

“We have sold over 2,000 more Early Birds than at this time last season, and the renewal rate has increased from 70 per cent to 83 per cent.

“That’s a fantastic show of support, and we would like to once again thank the fans for their backing of the team which will be as vital as ever next season.

“It’s a great endorsement of what we are trying to achieve as a club and another impressive show of strength from our loyal supporters.”

Moxey, who saw 5,300 fans back the side in their last game at the City Ground, added: “Coupled with the magnificent away following we viewed in such numbers at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, to see fans renew their season tickets in their thousands once again tells us everything we need to know about our excellent support.”

Meanwhile, tickets are now on general sale for Wolves’ next crucial fixture, the top-of-the-table Midlands derby at Birmingham on April 6.

Approximately 1,000 tickets from the 2,700 allocation are now available, limited to one per supporter.
