Union chief to take part in Auto Industry Summit

One of the leading figures in the union movement has agreed to join the panel at the Auto Industry Summit taking place at the ICC on February 3.

Tony Woodley, general secretary of Unite, will be joined by Jaguar Land Rover Boss David Smith, leading academic and expert on the industry David Bailey and MP for Castle Bromwich Sion Simon.

The event, which has been organised by Birmingham City Council, the NEC Group, Marketing Birmingham and BPM Media (Midlands) Ltd, aims to bring together leading figures to debate the current criss in the automotive sector.

A manifesto of support will be drawn up at the conference - which is set to be attended by more than 200 delegates - and delivered to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson when he visits the city later that week.

Three weeks agao the Birmingham Post - alongside four of leading regional titles - launched a campiagn calling on the government to offer financial assistance to JLR which has seen its credit lines disappear during the current banking crisis. More than 100,000 jobs - both directly and indirectly - would be affected if the company was allowed to fail.
