Glynn Purnell’s top class, inventive cooking has won him an award for the best restaurant in the UK.
The Birmingham chef’s eponymous city centre restaurant in Cornwall Street picked up the BMW Square Meal Best UK Restaurant Award 2012.
It is a timely win as it coincides with the Michelin-starred restaurant’s fifth birthday.
Purnell said. “To receive this accolade now is an honour for myself and my team.
"What makes it even more poignant is that we are due to celebrate our fifth year of business. We opened the doors on July 7, 2007 at 7pm.
“To win such a coveted award doesn’t mean restaurateurs should become complacent. I can honestly say I love the job I do on a daily basis.
"I am in a fortunate position right now but it hasn’t been easy. I have got here through sheer hard work and determination.
“I’m driven by my passion to be able to excite people through food, especially the innovative dishes inspired by my childhood.”
There was close competition for this year’s award from other highly-rated UK restaurants including Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume, Sat Bains’ Nottingham restaurant and Nathan Outlaw in Cornwall.
Square Meal’s editor Ben McCormack said: “Glynn Purnell more than anyone has put Birmingham on the culinary map. He thoroughly deserves this award.”
Previous winners of the BMW Square Meal UK award include Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons.
