Woman dies in level crossing crash

A woman has died after the car she was driving was shunted into the path of a train at a level-crossing.

The woman driver died following the accident at a level-crossing in South Drove, near Spalding, Lincolnshire.

A statement from Lincolnshire Police said: "Early indications point to an initial collision with a Ford Transit van just before the level crossing.

"It is believed at this stage this may have shunted the Rover into the tracks. The barriers then came down and the accident took place."

The incident involved the 8.33am Peterborough to Lincoln service operated by East Midlands Trains.

Network Rail said the train was not derailed and was only slightly damaged.

It added that trains were terminating at Sleaford in Lincolnshire while the incident was being investigated.
