SURREY county cricketer Tom Maynard has died after he was hit by a train in the early hours of this morning.

The 23-year-old, who was widely tipped as a future England international, was struck near Wimbledon Park station on the London Underground District Line shortly after 5am.

The Cardiff-born cricketer was the son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew Maynard.

British Transport Police said: “The incident was reported to BTP at 5.03am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”

London Ambulance Service medics were called but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surrey County Cricket Club described the batsman as “incredibly talented”.

The club said: “He had impressed in all forms of the game, scoring a maiden first-class hundred in Cardiff last year, playing a key role in Surrey’s victory in the Clydesdale Bank 40 and earning selection for the England Lions.

“His future potential was unlimited, with experts both inside and outside the club predicting he would soon follow in the footsteps of his father Matthew by graduating to full England honours.
