McKinnon to learn extradition fate
COMPUTER hacker Gary McKinnon will find out today whether Home Secretary Theresa May will end his 10-year battle against extradition to the United States.
The ups and downs of his fight have been so cruel they amount to “waterboarding of the mind”, his mother Janis Sharp said.
But she is hopeful that Mrs May will end her son’s suffering by blocking his extradition to the US, where he is accused of “the biggest military computer hack of all time”.
Inflation figure expected to fall
INFLATION is expected to have dropped to its lowest level for nearly three years in September, but there are fears the respite may only be brief as energy bills start to rise.
Most experts believe official figures today will show consumer price index (CPI) inflation falling to 2.2% in September from 2.5% seen in August – but some believe it could even drop to below the Government’s 2% target.
Vicky Redwood, at Capital Economics, is pencilling in a fall to 1.9%, which would be the first time CPI has been under 2% since November 2009.
Number of young out of work soars
THE number of young people out of work for longer than two years has more than doubled since 2008, according to new research.
A study by The Prince’s Trust showed a 168% increase, with an even bigger jump in 18 to 24-year-olds out of work for at least six months.
Yorkshire and the Humber had the biggest increase in those claiming jobseeker’s allowance for six months or longer, with some parts of the region hit by a 12-fold rise since before the recession.
Briton on trial for lover’s death
A BRITISH man is due to go on trial in Greece today charged with murdering his girlfriend on the holiday island of Crete.
Waitress Chelsea Hyndman, of Castleford, West Yorkshire, died after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion with abdominal pains in May 2010.
Greek prosecutors say her boyfriend, Luke Walker, 24, from Brierley Hill, near Dudley, West Midlands, attacked her, inflicting the fatal injuries.
Motive sought in family deaths fire
POLICE were today investigating whether a doctor and her four children who were killed in a suspected arson attack on their home were not the intended targets.
Sabah Usmani, sons Sohaib, 11, and Rayan, six, and 12-year-old daughter Hira, died in their end-of-terrace house in Barn Mead, Harlow, Essex, in the early hours of yesterday.
Her husband, Abdul Shakoor, also a doctor, suffered minor injuries as he fought to rescue his family from the blaze.
