Plans to merge Matthew Boulton and Sutton Coldfield colleges submitted

Plans to merge two Birmingham colleges to create the biggest further education institution in the West Midlands have been forwarded to the Government for approval.

If go-ahead is given, the proposals will see Matthew Boulton College and Sutton Coldfield College become a super-sized further education institution with more than 25,000 students.

Principal of the new centre will be Christine Braddock, the current head of Matthew Boulton College.

Ms Braddock, who was made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in July, said: “The merged college will seek to capitalise on the joint experience and expertise of the two colleges, to provide a learning experience second to none. We will retain the best features of the individual institutions, but also bring added value and synergies to the benefit of learners in the region.”

A decision is expected later this year and, if the plans get the green light, the new institution will open just before Christmas.
