New mental health centre opens in Edgbaston

Comedian Jo Brand has opened a new £70m mental health centre in Birmingham alongside Health Secretary Alan Johnson.

Jo Brand and Alan Johnson open the UK Centre for Mental Health in Edgbaston.

The 137-bed UK Centre for Mental Health in Edgbaston is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe, the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust said.

The centre, which provides single en-suite rooms, therapeutic activities and psychological treatments, was opened by Mr Johnson and Ms Brand, a former psychiatric nurse.

Mr Johnson said: "Not only is it a state-of-the-art building offering the highest quality of care, it has also been developed in close partnership with staff, service users and the wider community."

Sue Turner, chief executive of the trust, said: "Our new facilities offer an amazing opportunity to reshape our services and ensure our patients receive the highest quality treatment and care."
