New Street Station evacuated as train catches fire
Commuters in Birmingham were left stranded after a train fire led to the closure of New Street Station at tea time on Thursday.
West Midlands Fire Service was called reports of a fire in the exhaust system of an Arriva Cross Country high-speed train. The station was evacuated and all train services suspended.
A spokesman for Network Rail said the train had pulled up at platform 11B at 6.40pm without signs of a fire. He said: “The station staff’s immediate reaction was that they couldn’t see signs of a fire but when they did, they called the fire brigade.”
Two fire engines from Ladywood and two from Highgate were used to tackle the blaze.
By 8pm all platforms had reopened but services still faced delays and cancellations because of the hold-up.
