Student found hanged at University of Birmingham
A Birmingham University student has been found dead in a lecture hall after apparently committing suicide.
The body of Mohammed Abdelmohsin Omer, aged 29, originally from Sudan, was discovered by fellow students who were attending a lecture in the Gisbert Kapp building of the university’s campus in Edgbaston.
Paramedics pronounced the student dead after being called to the scene at around 9.45am on Monday. It is thought that Mr Omer had hanged himself.
One student, who did not wish to be named, said: “Everyone is really shocked by what has happened. The campus was crawling with police officers.
“I have been told that he did it in the lecture room so that he could be found by those he was studying with. No-one really knows why he did it though. I didn’t know the man but it’s such a waste of life.”
West Midlands Police confirmed they were not treating the death as suspicious.
An inquest into Mr Omer’s death was opened and adjourned on Tuesday by Birmingham coroner Aiden Cotter.
Mr Omer’s brother is believed to have attended the hearing.
