Pirate DVDs seized in raid on Digbeth flat

A massive haul of bootleg DVDs, including copies of multiple-Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire, have been seized from a flat in Birmingham.

Consumer protection officials said other titles which have not yet been released on DVD were among 40,000 "pirate" items uncovered at an apartment in Bradford Street, Digbeth.

Birmingham's trading standards department said three rooms at the property were "piled high" with films, including Bollywood hits and Hollywood movie Confessions of a Shopaholic.

It is thought the apartment was used as a distribution centre to supply traders selling the DVD's on the streets.

The chair of Birmingham's public protection committee, Neil Eustace, said: "This seizure is just the latest in a series of investigations that illustrate the scale of the problem.

"Pirate DVDs undermine and jeopardise not only future entertainment production but also the livelihood of retailers who are already suffering due to the current economic crisis."
