Birmingham scientist to dress as poo for Gormley Trafalgar project

A Birmingham scientist dressed in a “poo costume” is among the first 615 people chosen to occupy Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth in the latest project by sculptor Anthony Gormley.

Nearly 14,000 people have applied to take part in the ‘One and Other’ project, which will see a different person take their place on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours-a-day for 100 days from Monday, July 6.

The first group of 615 participants for the project have been announced and come from as far afield as Coleraine in Northern Ireland to the Norfolk coast.

They include Kay Lockley, aged 48, from Oldbury, who aims to raise awareness of Lupus, and Moseley scientist Oliver Parsons-Baker, aged 26. He plans to highlight the importance of clean water from Water Aid by dressing up as human excrement before changing into a fish costume to illustrate the dangers of overfishing.

“I was apprehensive because I’m not really a public speaker, but I’m happy to do this and my friends think it’s really interesting,” said Mr Parsons-Baker, who works at Severn Trent Water. “Plus, not many people can say they’ve been on the plinth dressed as poo,”

The project is commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced in partnership with Sky Arts, who will be broadcasting a 24-hour feed on www.oneandother.co.uk
