Randal Brew to stand down as committee chairman
Defeated Birmingham City Council leadership contender Randal Brew is to stand down as chairman of the Northfield Constituency Committee.
Coun Brew (Con Northfield) said he decided to quit because he believed he had lost the confidence of a majority of local councillors.
Last month Coun Brew failed in an attempt to oust Mike Whitby as leader of the council Conservative group and of the council itself.
He wrote to colleagues last week explaining that he had decided not to seek re-election as constituency committee chairman.
The job, overseeing local services in Northfield, carries a £4,196 special responsibility allowance.
Coun Brew said: “One or two people asked me to reconsider so I said I would do so if people wanted me to carry on as chairman.
“But I haven’t heard anything so I have decided to stand down.
“I am not particularly bothered either way.”
The new constituency committee chairman will be Longbridge Tory councillor Ken Wood.
