A man riding a quad bike without a helmet was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after he collided with a BMW near the city centre.
Paramedics were called to the accident outside the Barton Arms pub, in Newtown Row, Newtown, at 10.15am yesterday.
Crews sedated the 26-year-old at the scene because of the seriousness of his condition and began emergency treatment. He was then flown by air ambulance, wearing a neck collar and lying on a spinal board to Selly Oak Hospital, where medics were waiting.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Police closed the road enabling the air ambulance to land as near to the incident as possible. Unfortunately the man was not wearing a helmet which could have significantly reduced the level of injury sustained.”
