Plans to create a gypsies and travellers champion in an attempt to ease tensions between existing communities and the travelling population have been put forward by a Black Country council. Members of Sandwell’s ruling cabinet will also look at recommendations for a gypsy and traveller awareness month and publishing thousands of leaflets explaining why nomadic people are misunderstood. The project, put forward in a 40-page report of the authority’s equality and diversity panel, would see the creation of a gipsy and traveller liaison officer - something the report claims is common among UK local authorities.
