Pupils struck down by Norovirus at Redditch school

“We have given the school advise on hygiene and environmental cleaning and we are in touch with them on a daily basis.

“There has been checks conducted with feeder schools, but no others have been affected. It is just this school.

“This virus, also known as winter vomiting bug, is quite common at this time of year and there is no specific treatment.

“The illness must be allowed to run its course and people are advised to stay away from school or work until two days after the symptoms have ceased.”

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that are the most common cause of gastroenteritis (stomach bugs) in England and Wales.

It is easily transmitted from one person to another by contact with an infected person, by consuming contaminated food or water or by contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

The most high profile outbreak of Norovirus happened earlier this year at the award-winning restaurant of TV chef, Heston Blumenthal.

He apologised after diners were taken ill at the Fat Duck restaurant in Berkshire, which has three-Michelin-stars.

The Health Protection Agency found that raw shellfish served at the restaurant had been contaminated with human sewage.
