Warwickshire arsonist subject of interim hospital order

A youth who stood trial in connection with a fire which claimed the lives of two Warwickshire pensioners has been made the subject of an interim hospital order.

The 17-year-old was not convicted of any offence in relation to the deaths of Albert and Kathleen Adams, but was due to be sentenced on Thursday at Birmingham Crown Court for a separate arson attack.

The teenager, who has learning difficulties, was given an interim order lasting 11 weeks to allow a consultant psychologist more time to assess him.

Mr and Mrs Adams, both aged 77, died after a mobility scooter was set on fire outside their home in Harold Cox Place, Rugby, on February 27 last year.

Two counts of manslaughter brought against the 17-year-old boy were not proceeded with after legal argument mid-way through his trial in February this year.

But the youth pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered in relation to a second blaze which broke out in Harold Cox Place two days after the fatal fire.

No one was injured in the second incident, in which a mobility scooter was also targeted.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is now expected to be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on July 29.
