Swimmers who were looking forward to returning to an historic Birmingham swimming baths which was shut for repairs have been dealt yet another delay.
Moseley Road Baths, in Balsall Heath, was due to reopen on July 15 after it was forced to close due to damage discovered around a fire exit surround earlier this year.
This date has now been pushed back a further nine weeks after the city council’s health and safety team inspected the site and concluded that more work needed to be done.
The impact of these additional health and safety conditions has almost doubled work costs from £55,000 to almost £100,000.
Local swimming groups and parents staged a “We Want to Swim” demonstration outside the baths on Monday.
According to Councillor Martin Mullaney, cabinet member for leisure sport and culture, the building’s basement needs to be surveyed and permanent scaffolding inserted to hold up sections of the floor and roof.
