Edgbaston Golf Club, which stretches over 144 acres of grounds originally landscaped by Capability Brown, has secured its long term future by signing a new lease with land owners Calthorpe Estates.
The Grade II-listed clubhouse at the Church Road venue, which is considered one of region’s best courses a jewel in Edgbaston’s crown, was previously the home of the Calthorpe family when the club was known as Edgbaston Park.
David Johnson, treasurer for the club, said: “With the long term future of Edgbaston Golf Club secured, we are planning to continue our investment programme and will be upgrading the conference and leisure facilities.
“In recent years we have invested heavily in the course, introducing a new drainage and irrigation system. The greens have never been in better shape and we have a thriving club that continues to attract more players and encourages young players too.
“It is such a beautiful, historic setting and we are happy to welcome visitors to enjoy our restaurant and conference facilities.
“Many people are unaware of the treasure on their doorstep so we are keen to make the venue as accessible as possible and encourage people to come and see what the club has to offer.”
Richard Allen, chief executive of Calthorpe Estates, added: “We have been engaged in discussions with the golf club for a little while to identify and settle new arrangements between us that will enable this unique facility to continue to prosper and evolve.
“We wholly endorse the club’s objectives to welcome more groups and individuals from home and overseas, to that they can enjoy this magnificent venue.”
