Fewer flying from Birmingham

Passenger levels at Birmingham International Airport fell slightly last month. The airport handled 576,130 passengers during January, including 476,507 scheduled passengers and 99,623 charter passengers - a fall of just 0.1 per cent over the previous year.

Joe Kelly, acting managing director of Birmingham International Airport, said: "However, we had some fantastic news with Ryanair announcing a base at Birmingham and the introduction of 20 routes from April."

Routes that saw growth included Bratislava (up 955.4 per cent); Murcia (up 335 per cent); Barcelona (up 179.5 per cent); Geneva (up 94.2 per cent): Arrecife (up 88.1 per cent); Paphos (up 87.6 per cent); Dusseldorf (up 13.6 per cent); Glasgow (up 13.6 per cent); Zurich (up 13.5 per cent); Almeria (up 10.3 per cent); Munich (up 5.9 per cent); Copenhagen (up 5.8 per cent); Gothenburg (up 4.9 per cent); Stuttgart (up 4.8 per cent) and Inverness (up 2.5 per cent).
