Idon't know whether the education establishment is just plain stupid or merely duplicitous when it shows surprise and irritation that private school pupils are still obtaining the most places at top universities, particularly in science....

There was much amazement when, in the early 1970s, true blue Solihull became one of the first boroughs to abandon grammar schools in favour of a wholly comprehensive education system; and even more when, some years later, Mrs Thatcher offered them the chance to restore grammar schools and they turned her down....
